Let me start by saying that the first Turkish series I have ever watched was Aşk-I Memnu. Let me also add that, to this date, Aşk-I Memnu is not the best series I have ever watched. However, the series will forever have a special place in my heart. Why? Because I have met the most talented actress on the planet. Well, when I watched her as Bihter, I was shocked by the special talent she had. She was so elegant, so classy, so strong. At that time, 8 years ago, when I was 11 years old, I fell in love with the strong woman Bihter was. After the last episode of Aşk-I Memnu, I have placed Beren Saat as my idol and role model in life.
Beren Saat, an international star. Aşk-I Memnu was indeed the debut of her career around the world. She became so popular because of this series that nowadays she is recognized by the Middle Eastern people as “Samar” (Bihter) or “Fatma” (Fatmagül). Fatmagül’ün Suçu Ne? is again one of her most popular series. After watching Beren as Fatmagül, I was convinced that this woman is the most talented actress I have ever came across. I started loving and respecting her much more. She played very difficult and sensitive scenes and managed to nail it! This woman overwhelmed me with her acting.
Beren Saat became a big part of my life. I started watching a lot of Turkish series. I became curious to know more about the Turkish culture and its language. I started randomly learning some Turkish words that I, funnily, used to translate on Google Translate. I couldn’t wait for her upcoming series and the successes she was going to achieve. I prepared myself in all the possible ways to any next project she was going to do. Then, eventually, Intikam was released. I tried to watch some episodes in Turkish where I pretended in front of my parents that I totally understand what they were saying. Well, obviously I wasn’t. I only knew basic, few words but I was so proud of this little knowledge that I had. I felt like these words, if I ever get the chance to meet Beren, would be enough to express myself. And she will be so proud to see one of her foreigner’s fan speak her language, even if its random words.
I always wondered: Is Beren one of those stars who fully supports her fans? It was 2013 back then. Instagram was one of the newest social media platforms. I had my private account and I thought “Sarah, why don’t you add a second one dedicated to your idol?”. And that’s what I did, June 2 2013, @BerenSaatIsMyIdol was created. Through this page, I would be sharing my love for Beren, I will be showing the world how much respect and admiration I have for this woman. I started sharing Intikam’s pictures. Indeed, the series was still airing during this time. Obviously, I loved the character she was playing. Well, the two characters actually: Yağmur & Derin.
Days after days, I started gaining more followers. I honestly was never aiming for followers. All I wanted is to share Beren’s talent as far as I could. This obviously needed followers but I never did put effort on gaining them. However, all the effort that I have put was on the content I used to share. Maybe this was a wrong strategy. Maybe if I promoted myself better I would have reached a huge number of followers now, after 5 years. I am at 24K to date, which is comparatively less to any other account that have opened way later after me. But you know what? I am so proud of this number of followers that I have reached and I send much love and respect to them.
When I first opened this page, Beren wasn’t on Instagram yet. If I am not mistaken, she was one of the latest Turkish stars to create a page to herself. When she went online, 24th of April 2014, this was probably the best day of my life. I was now able to communicate with her, to share my love and she was finally able to see it. I was now able to know how much Beren is supportive to her fans. And let me tell you something, surprisingly, I would have never imagined her to be that supportive. I was overwhelmed by the love and support she shows to her fans. Indeed, few months later, on the 22nd of July 2014, Beren followed me. I couldn’t believe my eyes. I couldn’t believe that she will be seeing all my posts on her feed. What a day it was! I started paying more and more attention to the content I share and, on the 31st of December 2014, on New Year’s Eve, another amazing surprise happened. That day I woke up and I find out that Beren has reposted my picture. She also added in the caption: “Thanks @berensaatismyidol happy new year.” Words can’t express that feeling. The feeling of a fan being noticed by her idol, the feeling of a teenager seeing an appreciation post to her work, from her idol! It was a dream. The best gift I could ask for. I entered the year 2015 with so much love and happiness in my heart. I was super excited for all the upcoming work I will be sharing on my account.
Unfortunately, few days later, 6th of January 2015, Beren unfollows me. I was heartbroken. I was so angry towards her. All I wanted is close my page and stop everything. Luckily, I had made amazing friends via this account, they were here for me and supported me to the maximum. After all, this page was my other half, I couldn’t close it that easily. @BerenSaatIsMyIdol continued running. Later, I had realised that the big number of posts I used to share per day were the reason behind the unfollow and I totally respect her decision as a star.
So, this is my story with Beren. A personal story that means a lot to me. All the roles she has played are very special to my heart. My favorite? It’s definitely Ela in Benim Düyam.
I have achieved almost all of my goals. I got the chance to see her at the Murex D’Or 2016 in Beirut but never talked to her. The last wish on my list is to one day meet her and have a small chat with her about her carrier, her achievements, etc.
What a woman! The prettiest, the sweetest, the kindest, the most talented, the funniest, the strongest, the closest to her fans. For the world, she is one of the most talented actresses and a woman that made Turkey known worldwide. For her fans and family, not only she is an icon but also a woman of a kind. She is a special woman by her big heart, her smart brain, her love for others and her support to others. I am so proud to be one of your fans and I will forever be. To an icon in this world, to my inspiration in life, to my role model, to my big sister and favourite woman, to the woman you have become, to the woman you will be, cheers to many more!
P.S: My page is running as @OBerenSaat. "She is Beren Saat"
